Chair of the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM)

The College of Education at the University of Maryland invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM). We seek a nationally or internationally recognized scholar with the vision and interdisciplinary perspective required to lead a strong and diverse faculty in its efforts to advance its tripartite mission of research, teaching, and service. The College of Education is a vibrant community advancing equitable, transformative change in schools and communities through impactful research, innovative programs and collaborative partnerships. We conduct research across education, counseling, human development and quantitative methodology, bridging research and practice while shaping education policy such as Maryland's Blueprint. We prepare equity-minded educators, counselors, psychologists and leaders through experiential, community-based learning built on strong partnerships. The 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty in the HDQM department contribute to new knowledge in developmental science, educational psychology, or quantitative methodology. Faculty members regularly receive funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Education Sciences, many national and local foundations, and through state and federal contracts. The department's professional track faculty lead undergraduate programs, support student success, curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The department is home to graduate programs in Human Development and Quantitative Methodology: Measurement and Statistics, undergraduate programs in Human Development and a major in Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education with dual certification (jointly administered with the Special Education Program in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education). The Department administers the Center for Young Children, a lab school of 100 pre-school and kindergarten children with a research, practice, and training mission. Qualifications for the position include: Minimum Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in human development, educational psychology, developmental psychology, measurement, quantitative methods, or a related area

Record of publications and funding commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor Administrative or leadership experience, such as serving as department chair, center director, program director/coordinator, associate dean, or other comparable roles

Capacity for fiscal and human resource management

Commitment to building a collaborative and community-oriented environment

Ability to develop and support relationships across the university and community. Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated national or international leadership and scholarship in education, human development, quantitative methodology, or a related area

A record of engaging and collaborating with stakeholders relevant to developmental science, educational psychology, and quantitative methodology

Capacity to lead with responsiveness, transparency, and fairness - building trust and shared purpose among faculty with distinct disciplinary identities

Experience in supporting and managing research centers

Evidence of creative innovations in teaching and program development

Experience with developing a vision and strategic plan

Strong record of service to the profession and the broader community
