Job Description Summary: The City of Columbia is actively seeking skilled and dedicated individuals for the position of Mechanic I in the Public Works Department. As a Mechanic I, you will play a crucial role in servicing, diagnosing, and repairing city vehicles and equipment to ensure their safe working condition.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Services, diagnoses, and repairs city vehicles and equipment to maintain safe working condition.
- Conducts and documents motor vehicle inspections for all city equipment, ensuring accurate records are maintained.
- Adheres to proper safety protocols.
- Assists fleet personnel and other departments as needed.
- Maintains knowledge of current technology.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2-year technical degree or three years of journey-level experience in vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no airbrake restriction within 6 months of hire.
- Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.
- Missouri Motor Vehicle Inspector License within 6 months of hire.
- Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Equipment Certification within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of standard practices in the automotive and mechanical trades, welding, fabrication, and safety protocols.
- Skill in recognizing, analyzing, and solving a variety of problems, effective verbal and written communication, active listening, and applying questions for understanding.
- Ability to read and understand hydraulic and electrical diagrams, maintain detailed and accurate records, use and maintain hand and power tools, and work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Starting Salary: $22.47 per hour and $1.00 per hour shift differential for all hours worked between 6 pm and 6 am

Special Instructions to Applicants: The City of Columbia, Missouri is seeking highly motivated and dependable individuals willing to provide journey-level maintenance and repair service to our vehicles and equipment.
The starting salary is a minimum of $22.47 per hour plus a shift differential of $1.00 per hour for all hours worked from 6: 00 pm – 6: 00 am.
You will also receive an annual allowance of $1,000 for tool replacement, $336 for jeans, $50 for winter outerwear, $175 for safety boots, and $50 for any required eye protection. All uniform work shirts are also provided.
