Job Description Summary:
The City of Columbia is hiring a Water Operator III to play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our water treatment facilities and well fields. This position involves hands-on leadership in maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations, monitoring treatment systems, and performing essential water quality tests.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate and monitor water treatment systems, adjusting water flow and maintaining tower and reservoir levels.
• Test water samples and ensure compliance with safety and quality regulations.
• Maintain and calibrate equipment, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
• Train and guide other operators to ensure a seamless shift transition.
• Maintain accurate records of water quality, system performance, and treatment adjustments.
• Clean and maintain facilities and equipment to ensure operational efficiency.

Qualifications:

• Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

• Experience:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in water treatment or a related field.

• Licenses/Certifications:

  • Class A Water Operator’s Certificate (Missouri Department of Natural Resources).
  • Valid driver’s license.

Skills and Abilities:

• Proficient in reading gauges, flow meters, and operating mechanical systems.
• Strong knowledge of safety standards, water treatment regulations, and SCADA systems.
• Skilled in organizing tasks, maintaining records, and communicating effectively.
• Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools safely and effectively.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, mechanical equipment, loud noise, and airborne particles.
• Requires regular physical activity, including standing, walking, kneeling, and lifting up to 35 pounds.
• Use of safety equipment, such as respirators or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), may be necessary.

Schedule:

• Shift Details: 12-hour shifts (7: 00 PM – 7: 00 AM) on a rotating schedule, including weekends and holidays.
