ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT (9-month, Tenure-Track Appointment) December 13, 2024 Samford Universitys Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in working in a Christian university environment to apply for the position of Assistant Professor of Sociology beginning in Fall 2025. Qualied candidates will either hold a Ph.D. or be ABD, near completion, in sociology, criminology, or a closely related eld from an institutionally accredited university, or equivalent, at the time of appointment. This tenure-track, full-time faculty position is a 9-month appointment with a twenty-four (24) credit hour teaching load per academic year, as well as expectations for active research and service agendas. We are seeking a broadly trained sociologist who incorporates Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into their teaching and research. Preference for teaching and research experience in one or more of the following areas: criminology/deviance, social stratication, or environmental sociology. This individual will teach introductory courses in GIS and sociology. Additional upper-level courses will be designed according to expertise. All faculty are expected to mentor undergraduate research, as well as advise and recruit majors. The applicant we hire will also teach in our interdisciplinary University Core Curriculum (https://www.samford.edu/programs/undergraduate/core-curriculum). The geography and sociology department is a dynamic department with 4 geography professors, 4 sociology professors, and approximately 45 majors. In addition to a B.S. in Geography (major and minor) and B.A. in Sociology (major and minor), our department also offers minors in Environmental Studies, Race, Ethnicity, and Social Justice, and Geographical Information Science. The program is undergraduate only and focuses on providing a rigorous liberal arts education with engaging learning experiences and research opportunities for our students.
