Job Description PURPOSE SUMMARY. Responsible to supervise and monitor staff to enforce federal, state, and local environmental vector control laws, regulations and ordinances. Investigate complaints of mosquitoes, and safely spray chemicals to control and prevent the growth of mosquitoes and pest control. ESSENTIAL DUTIES. 1. Supervision:
2. Investigate complaints concerning insects and rodent infestation; advise responsible parties on principles of vector control, testing and trapping of all pesticides. 3. Inspect parks, residential and commercial properties; collect environmental specimens and samples for analysis to conduct field test for determination of larval, adult insect and rodent activities. 4. Conduct preventative maintenance and clean county vehicle and chemical spraying equipment. 5. Maintain an inventory of records of equipment, field inspections, pesticide usage and field surveys; review written records and logs of spraying and usage of vehicles. 6. Post and distribute public notices or other environmental health information and warnings. 7. Attend and conduct staff meetings and other required committee, public meetings or training. 8. Responsible for expenditures of budget, requisitions, items needed for daily operations and monitors staff certifications. 9. Operate a variety of light equipment in remote areas of the county. This includes but is not limited to skid steer, ATV’s, riding lawn mowers, and fogging equipment. 10. Conduct public engagement and outreach activities through meetings, events and dissemination of information. 11. Spray, treat, and bait to control vectors using judgment in selecting appropriate materials and methods. Apply pesticides as needed inside and outside. ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Other duties may be assigned. Subject to; call back, working flexible hours on a seasonal basis, weekends and holidays. QUALIFICATIONS. A. Education. High School Diploma or equivalent B. Experience. Five (5) years of full-time experience in the vector control field and working with pesticides, and two (2) years as a supervisor or lead. C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County policy. D. Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with County policy. Must have or be able to obtain a New Mexico Department of Agriculture Public Pest Operator’s License category 7D, Wood Destroying Pest Control within the first 18 months of hire. Must have or be able to obtain the following New Mexico Department of Agriculture Public Pest Operator’s Licenses within the first six (6) months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Knowledge: Doña Ana County and surrounding areas; laws, regulations, and ordinances relating to vector control and pesticides; various chemicals used for the control of mosquitoes; use in personal computer, spreadsheets and database software, sample and monitor instruments; occupational safety and health regulations, working practices and procedures; proper safety protocols; precautionary measures and maintenance of equipment; maintain files, record sampling data and prepare reports; clear, concise, oral and written communications; and supervisory/lead principles, practices and methods. Skills: Plan, organize, and direct staff in safely operating vehicles and equipment of areas that are highly populated with mosquitoes and various insects; work operational systems, procedures, standards and practices; collect, analyze, and interpret vector surveillance data. Ability: Communicate and interact with the public in face-to-face, one-on-one settings, a group setting, or using a telephone in order to assure compliance with regulations; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures; observe or monitor objects, people’s behavior, and data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
