AP102 Summer Intern/Technician, Next Generation X-ray Optics (NGXO)
Location: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD 20771
Duration: Full-Time, 10 Weeks (Summer Internship)
Position Overview
The Next Generation X-ray Optics (NGXO) program at NASA Goddard is developing cutting-edge mirror technology for future X-ray space telescopes that will enable transformational science on black holes, galaxy clusters, and the cosmic evolution of matter and energy. We are seeking summer interns at the technician level to assist with hands-on research and development activities in support of this mission.

This 10-week, full-time internship is open to current undergraduate students pursuing degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or related fields. Interns will work side-by-side with NASA scientists and engineers in a dynamic, multidisciplinary laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities

  • Support assembly and testing of ultra-thin X-ray mirror segments requiring sub-micron precision.
  • Assist in the design, construction, or operation of experimental setups, including robotics and precision metrology tools.
  • Contribute to automation and software development tasks, including control systems, data acquisition, and image processing.
  • Perform experimental validation of new concepts and participate in iterative prototyping efforts.
  • Document procedures, collect data, and present results to the NGXO team.

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or related fields.
  • Strong interest in experimental research, space technology, and/or precision instrumentation.
  • Experience with mechanical or electrical systems, programming, or laboratory work is beneficial but not required.
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a collaborative team environment.

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience in a world-class NASA R&D facility.
  • Exposure to spaceflight hardware development and multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Mentorship from experienced NASA engineers and scientists.
  • Opportunities to develop skills in robotics, optics, programming, and high-precision assembly.
