Overview A screed operator, also known as an asphalt screed operator, is responsible for operating the screed (a device that levels and spreads asphalt) on a paving machine. They adjust the screed to ensure the asphalt is spread evenly and at the correct thickness, contributing to a smooth and consistent road surface. Responsibilities Operating the Screed: Adjusting and manipulating controls on the screed to level and spread asphalt. Ensuring Proper Asphalt Thickness: Working with the paver operator to maintain the correct depth of asphalt. Achieving a Smooth Surface: Ensuring the asphalt is laid smooth and free of blemishes. Following Job Specifications: Adhering to project plans and specifications for asphalt thickness, grade, and other requirements. Maintaining Equipment: Performing basic maintenance on the screed and related equipment. Safety: Ensuring a safe work environment by following safety protocols and procedures. Communication: Communicating with the paver operator and other crew members to ensure smooth operations. Assist with Job Layout: Assisting with job layout and having a thorough understanding of the paving plan. Working with Paving Equipment: Working with other paving equipment like rollers and loaders. Qualifications Required Skills and Qualities: Experience with Paving Equipment: Experience operating paving machines and screeds is essential.
