Executive Director, Development
The Executive Director, Development will lead and manage the Cathedrals fundraising strategy and execution. We seek an experienced development professional, enthusiastic about the Cathedrals mission and ministries and experienced in campaign planning, major donor cultivation, philanthropic and annual giving. The Executive Director, Development is a member of the Cathedrals senior leadership team and will report directly to the Dean of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, the seat of its Bishop, and a thriving center for Christian worship. The Cathedral serves the vulnerable and curates a wide array of world class music and fine arts programming. The Cathedral supports community families through the ACT (Advancing the Children of Tomorrow) educational program and has a K-8 school on site. We are an active campus, serving the city. We seek a development director who can help us draw resources to this New York City treasure.
The Executive Director, Development
- Establishes the vision and strategy for Cathedral giving. In partnership with the Dean, builds a culture of commitment for setting and reaching fundraising goals. Oversees relationship management with supporters. Is responsible for the strategic oversight and management of a development team. Is open to and promotes innovation. Works with the team to set and achieve clear and actionable goals across income streams, including individuals, foundations, and corporate partners. Uses metrics as a means of establishing goals, evaluating performance, and communicating progress. Develops and supports executional excellence--from hitting deadlines for grant proposals to writing thank you notesand understands that this is an essential characteristic of a winning development team. Will be a persuasive champion for the Cathedrals presence and contribution to the spiritual life of New York City. Actively engages with the philanthropic professional community. Will invite the entire Cathedral staff to see their part in this mission-critical work.
Specific requirements for candidates include:
- At least seven years of development experience in a leadership role. A track record of engaging people with the life and work of a non-profit organization. Skills and experience in leading, managing and strengthening a development team. A history of creating development strategies that meet and exceed goals, supported by skills and experience in creating budgets, forecasting revenue and closing six- and seven-figure gifts. Excellent organization skills. Significant experience in multi-channel fundraising (e.g. social media, website, calling and texting, direct mail, live or streamed events) across all the major categories (individuals, corporations and foundations). Strong relationships with New York Citys philanthropic community. Excellent listening, spoken and written communication skills. Working knowledge of CRM strategies and platforms, both to build donor loyalty and retention and to use data to inform fundraising strategies. A Bachelors degree required, Masters degree and/or CFRE preferred.
