Position Summary The City of Columbia, Missouri is seeking qualified and motivated Engineers to join our Utilities Department. This position provides professional engineering design, maintenance, and technical support to ensure proper system function, adequate capacity, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. We welcome both licensed Professional Engineers and candidates with strong technical or engineering experience who are eager to grow their careers through mentorship and professional development.
Starting Salary $34.78 to $42.79 per hour (minimum to midpoint), commensurate with training and experience. This position requires a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. However, candidates who do not yet possess a P.E. may be considered for hire as an Engineering Specialist, with a pay range of $31.33 to $38.55 per hour.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare, modify, review, and submit engineering and construction designs, plans, estimates, and specifications. Collect, analyze, and maintain technical and project data for engineering projects. Manage capital improvement projects from identification and prioritization through construction and final acceptance. Prepare cost estimates, technical specifications, and written reports. Conduct technical reviews on engineering and construction proposals, reports, plans, and calculations. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements and regulations. Participate in public meetings and communicate effectively with customers and stakeholders. Ensure projects follow the public process and comply with City ordinances. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field appropriate to the position required. Three to five years of experience in engineering, construction, or a related technical field preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Licenses and Certifications Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required for full Engineer classification. Valid driver’s license required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of civil engineering and construction principles, including hydraulics, structures, transportation, and sanitary sewer systems. Knowledge of surveying, mapping, and geotechnical methods. Familiarity with planning, zoning, and applicable regulations. Proficiency in engineering design software and computer-aided drafting. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage complex data, prepare detailed reports, and work from blueprints and plans. Ability to solve problems, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Commitment to accuracy, safety, and teamwork.
Work Environment Work is primarily performed in an office environment with occasional outdoor or field work. Exposure to outdoor weather, construction sites, and loud noises may occur occasionally. Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 8: 00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m., with occasional meetings outside regular hours.
