Job Description

PURPOSE SUMMARY. 

Provide advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care and limited invasive procedures under established protocols and physician direction; assess, stabilize, and transport patients experiencing medical or traumatic emergencies to appropriate medical facilities while ensuring patient safety and continuity of care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES. 

This is a safety-sensitive position.

1. Emergency Medical Response and Patient Care

• Respond to emergency medical calls and assess the nature and severity of illness or injury.

• Determine and initiate appropriate advanced life support measures in accordance with approved Dona Ana County EMS treatment guidelines as authorized by county medical director.

• Perform patient assessments and obtain medical histories to guide treatment decisions.

• Perform invasive procedures, including venipuncture, advanced airway management, and insertion of alternative airway devices.

• Maintain communication with dispatchers, supervisors, and medical personnel to report patient status and receive instructions.

• Assist in removing victims from accident or emergency scenes safely.

• Transport patients to designated medical facilities while monitoring and maintaining patient stability.

• Assist in maintaining scene safety, crowd control, and protection of property and valuables.

2. Medical Direction and Coordination

• Coordinate care of patience with continuum of care with healthcare providers.

• Provide guidance and support to Emergency Medical Technician–Basic personnel at emergency scenes.

• May act as the senior crew member and direct ambulance operation and function when delegated, particularly in the absence of a higher-level paramedic.

• Support initiatives that promote community health and reduce unnecessary hospitalizations.

3. Support and Maintenance

• Inspect, clean, and maintain emergency vehicles, medical equipment, and supplies.

• Restock and ensure readiness of advanced life support equipment and medications.

• Complete patient care reports and related documentation accurately and in compliance with policy.

• Participate in training programs, continuing education, and skill evaluations to maintain required certifications and enhance proficiency.

• Perform related duties to support operational effectiveness and ensure public safety.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES.  Other duties as assigned. May be required to work 12-hour or 24-hour rotating shifts as required by department needs.

QUALIFICATIONS.

A.  Education.  High school diploma or equivalent.

B.  Experience.  One (1) year of experience in an emergency medical care setting is required. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

C.  Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County Policy.

D.  Licenses/Certifications.

Required at time of application: Valid driver’s license. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy. Possess and maintain throughout employment a valid New Mexico EMT-Intermediate license and a current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers certification.

Must obtain the following within thirty-six months of hire:

• IFSAC or Pro Board Haz-Mat A/O

• IFSAC, or Pro Board Firefighter II

• IFSAC or Pro Board Emergency Vehicle Driver

• IFSAC or Pro Board Vehicle Extrication

• ICS 100 and 200; IS 700 and 800

• NM Class E Driver’s License.

• Basic Wildland Firefighter S130/190 L180

This is a transitional classification not to exceed thirty-six (36) months. Upon completion of all required certifications, the position will be reclassified to Firefighter-Intermediate. The employee must meet all pre-employment standards and qualifications required for appointment to the Firefighter position. Employees who do not meet the requirements within thirty-six (36) months may be subject to separation from employment.

E.  Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check.  Must pass Eye Detect and post-offer medical exam.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid, federal Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam certificate.

Subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing due to safety-sensitive duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• Methods, materials, and equipment used in emergency medical care and rescue operations.

• Pharmacology related to emergency medical treatment, including approved medications and dosages.

• Techniques of airway management, cardiac monitoring, and defibrillation.

• Local, state, and federal regulations governing emergency medical services.

• Principles of infection control, hazardous materials awareness, and scene safety.

• Radio communication systems and emergency dispatch protocols.

• Departmental policies, procedures, and documentation standards.

• Safe driving techniques and vehicle operation under emergency conditions.

Skill in:

• Performing advanced life support and emergency medical procedures under stressful conditions.

• Operating and maintaining medical equipment and life support systems.

• Communicating effectively with patients, coworkers, medical personnel, and the public.

• Observing, recording, and reporting patient conditions accurately and promptly.

• Using radio, computer, and mobile communication systems.

• Preparing and maintaining accurate medical and administrative records.

• Applying sound judgment in emergency and non-emergency situations.

• Providing instruction and guidance to other emergency medical personnel.

Ability to:

Compensation Range

$19.19 - $29.70
