Juvenile Detention Shift Manager State of Connecticut Judicial Branch Hartford The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch is seeking a Juvenile Detention Shift Manager to manages staff and operations during assigned shifts in accordance with established policies and procedures; in the absence of the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent, assume responsibility for all operations as the manager in charge; manage scheduled shift activities in accordance with established priorities and adjust work routines, schedules and staff assignments to ensure safety and security of juveniles and staff; on a daily basis throughout the shift, inspect operations and observe staff interactions with juveniles and provide staff coaching and counseling to improve performance and assist staff in resolving problems; consistently model appropriate behavior during all interactions with staff, juveniles and visitors; communicate policy requirements to staff and ensure staff adherence to policies; meet with staff and juveniles to assess and improve staff responses to juvenile needs; evaluate staff performance and conduct performance evaluations, including preparation of appropriate forms; provide regular onsite staff training; respond to emergencies in a supervisory capacity, taking charge and safely managing incidents to appropriate conclusion; manage incident follow up, including review of incident reports, and prepare suggestions for improvement; may maintain twenty-four hour on-call responsibility for the center and assigned shifts; oversee staff attendance records and daily logs; manage intake and release activities and ensure that referrals and admissions materials are complete and properly executed; collaborate and coordinate with medical and mental health to ensure juvenile healthcare needs are met; oversee safety inspections and fire drills; manage intake and release activities and ensure that referrals and admissions materials are complete and properly executed; conduct onsite visits to assigned programs to support start up and to ensure ongoing contract compliance; physically participate in juvenile restraints and take necessary action to quell disturbances and assist staff in managing problem juvenile behavior; prepare reports and correspondence; may perform duties outlined in lower-level job descriptions as assigned; perform other related duties as assigned. Salary Range: $95,247 - $124,811/year – plus State of Connecticut benefits. New employees begin at the minimum. The starting salary for existing state employees may be higher than the minimum, in accordance with existing Judicial Branch policy. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING General Experience: Six years of experience performing correctional work, institutional supervision of adolescents, juveniles or young adults, or comparable areas related to juvenile delinquency prevention. Substitutions Allowed: 1) College training may be substituted for General Experience on the basis of fifteen semester hours equaling one-half year of experience to a maximum of four years for a bachelor’s degree. 2) A master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for one additional year of General Experience. Special Requirements: 1) Candidates must successfully pass criminal and child welfare investigations. 2) Incumbents must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
